Webinar: A Practical Tool for Coastal Communities to Manage Climate Change Impacts

Online

February 3, 2022 1:00pm – 2:00pm EST

As a greater number of coastal communities grapple with climate change impacts such as rising sea levels, eroding shorelines, and extreme flooding events, it is becoming clear that coastal ecosystems can provide substantial protection with longer-term resilience compared to traditional grey infrastructure.

This webinar will present the Municipal Natural Assets Initiative’s new guidance  document: Managing Natural Assets to Increase Coastal Resilience: Guidance Document for Municipalities. The new guidance and accompanying Coastal Toolbox help governments identify, prioritize, value and manage key coastal natural assets as part of core local government asset management systems.

Hear also from the two communities that helped pilot the new Coastal Toolbox: the Town of Gibsons on British Columbia’s rugged west coast, and the community of Pointe-du-Chêne in New Brunswick, which is partly protected by the finely sanded Parlee Beach and coastal dunes that slope gently into the Northumberland Strait.

Presenters:

  • Michelle Molnar, Technical Director, Municipal Natural Assets Initiative
  • Michelle Lewis, Natural Asset Technician, Town of Gibsons
  • James Bornemann, Geomatics Manager, Southeast Regional Service Commission
